The Rosalia show was the best thing I have seen in so, so long. It was so great to see it in Boston, I cried so much. She seemed a bit raw, as far as I could tell! I sort of want to chuck it all in and follow her around. I made my husband go to her show in New York the following week (thanks to the Knicks tickets were a passable price!)
Although I’m not usually much of a visual art person, the paintings you shared here really made me feel things! Especially the barren Hopper paintings. And I think your read on their historical importance and meaning is spot on
I think that postwar to late pop era of painting is really interesting — lots of ink spilled in service of the abstract expressionists (rightfully! I could spend a full post on Grace Hartigan and her relationship to Frank O’Hara alone), but the figurative work is equally interesting. What classifies as “mundane?” What lives are worth memorializing? I could also do a whole post exclusively on Hockney’s dachshunds series. If I could paint, the first portrait I’d do is of my dog.
In the case of Hopper who we might think of as a realist, he was notorious for editing out sight lines he found burdensome, including entire buildings or bridges. Fwiw I love knowing that context about an artist as I spend more time with their work.
Yeah an artist’s technique can be super revealing as to what they intend to convey! I definitely need to look up this dachsund series from Hopper. I was delighted when Mitski’s album cover from earlier this year was a cat painting so this sounds very up my alley
